January socks

I promised my daughter a pair of socks for Christmas, but ran out of time.
So my first project for the Socks from Stash Club is a pair of Esther socks (pattern from the German Yahoo sock Kreatie group) in turquoise hand-dyed yarn from Fyberspates.

This is the oldest yarn in my stash, so I think that counts double, don't you?!

Pictures will follow... ready, steady....go!

My Sock Stash

I have trotted out my stash for all to see. Here is the sum total of sock yarn that I calculate will yield at least 30 pair of socks, if not more. As the year only has 12 months and there are other items that I wish to knit, I will have to sell off some of my babies to good homes. The decision is very difficult to make. The hard decisions will be made tomorrow and the some of these lovelies will be going up for trade or sale on Ravelry.
The first pair that I will cast on for is from the 2006/2007 Sundara Petals club. The yarn is call Bird of Paradise. It's the one one the far left, just above the orange and yellow Woolarina skeins.
I did manage to trade away 2 skeins of Spunky Eclectic for 8 skeins of lace weight. Not a gain really, butI was also interested knitting the Icarus shawl without having to spend any money on new yarn.

Decision made

Year 2007 is coming to the end (less than 4 hours left) so it is time to reveal my plans for January. I graduated on March 2007 and I wanted buy something for myself to celebrate it. What might sock maniac buy? Some sock yarn of course. I bought my first Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock skeins couple months earlier and I really liked it.

I bought eight skeins of Shepherd Sock to myself and I have only knitted three of them so it's time knit some more. I chose colourway Baltic Sea because I live on the coast of it and I'm worried about it. (Baltic Sea is the blueish yarn in right, yes I also bought some Wollmeise then too).

Deciding pattern was much more difficult than choosing the yarn but today I finally did it. I'm going to knit Firestarters with my Baltic Sea and HiyaHiya (1.75 mm) circulars. I hope I have time to cast on them on Wednesday.

Happy New Year to all of You!

Stash, stash & more stash

Here is a better picture of my stash. I have enough to make 30 pairs of socks. I ramdonly assigned each skein (or pair of skeins) a number and will ask my DH to pick the number for me. I'll be knitting from this stash and the stash for my Sock of the Month socks as well. If all goes as planned I'll have completed at least 2 pairs of socks a month, hopefully more. But we all know what happens to even the best laid plans. I'm going to do my best to stick with this. The hardest part will be not adding to the stash.
Happy New Year and Happy Knitting to all!

Can't wait....

I couldn't help it.... I cast on for my mom's socks. At xmas she was kinda bummed because she didn't get a new pair of socks... so I promised her my first pair for 2008 and ensured she would get a pair before the end of January because of joining the KAL.

I am doing a pair of ankle socks with a 50 gram ball of camo colored Regia in garter rib. So far I am about 3 in into the first sock and it is going well. Updates will follow.. along with more sock knitting excitement....GL to all knitters!!!

Ugly Wool

O.K. this my attempt at attaching a picture of the ugly wool. I don't think the wool is that ugly that it couldn't make a nice pair of socks.

Set to go

I have decided on a top up sock pattern from Knitty. I have never tried this method and thought this would be the challenge for Jan 08. I have a ball of sock yarn that came to me from my friend Rosemary. She thought the yarn was so ugly that she couldn't even knit with it. Rosemary was given this yarn from someone else who also thought it was ugly. I rescued the ball and put it in my stash. How can any yarn be ugly? It has no ball band and I am not sure if it is a full ball so that is why I decided on top up socks. I am not sure how to post a picture at this time, but once I figure it out I will post a picture of the ball.

ok I am ready

I am going to use the jitterbug colorway 119. that I just bought on friday, for my January socks.

I will be using clover double points 2.5 and using the pattern on the label called "simple sock pattern"

My 48 skeins of sock yarn

I think I have biggest sock yarn stash mentioned here, although some of them are 50g skeins. I have 40 different yarns (including the two balls of Opal Petticoat I ordered after Christmas). So it's no wonder I thought the idea of Club was so excellent when Roobeedoo mentioned it on her blog for the first time.

I'm going to pick my yarn using random number generator and my Ravelry stash. The choice for January is number 22, The Yarn Yard sock yarn in Rainforest. I bought this to make wool socks for my two little boys so I should make two pairs in January instead of one. They will be simple ribbed socks.

trying to get organized

I spent part of my day organizing and listing yarn on Ravelry (JessicaRose over there). I think I have less sock yarn that I previously thought but still have more than enough for this KAL. I'm debating on how to pick yarn/pattern combos each month. I might let my husband decide. He is very supportive of my knitting. He just ordered me 2 new skeins of sock yarn actually. Horrible enabler. Anyways he is just back from a deployment (US NAVY) and this might be a good way to include him in my hobby. If he seems disinterested in the task I can always let my 3 year old pick yarn. Of course then I'll have a struggle to pick the perfect pattern but we'll see.

Sock Stash Photo

As promised ages ago, here is a photo of my Sock Stash.

I'm currently knitting a pair of Tickled Pink Socks and Pink Ribbon Socks - but my first pair for January will be the Citrine Socklets from Interweave Holiday Knits I think, as I've some nice lime green cotton yarn in my stash.

Happy knitting everyone ;-)

Newbie

I am new to blogging(?) but not to knitting socks. I think this is a great way to knit down my stash so I can buy more in the Spring or Fall on my wool trip. I can't wait to get started!

Question of sign ups

I'm sorry to tell you this, but I cannot continue with moderator's job for the Club as I planned. I'm getting divorced and moving in another town with two toddlers. All has happened very suddenly and my personal life is a sad mess, so I'm trying to focus my strength on my life outside the internet.

I can either close sign ups in the beginning of January or then I'd ask some of you to take care of sending invitations to new members. We currently have 52 members and one open invitation. I'd like to hear your opinions on whether we should accept more members after the official starting date and if we do, is anyone willing to deal with invitations?

Time to knit not buy :)

Like many others, after putting my stash up on Ravelry I realised how much sock yarn I actually do have. 84 skeins to be precise (plus a £50 gift voucher from Wollmeise which will no doubt go on sock yarn ). I'm a really slow knitter, so this is probably enough sock yarn to last the rest of my lifetime. So, I've decided not to buy any more sock yarn in 2008! The idea took a bit of getting used to, but I want to knit up some of the gorgeous yarns I have in my stash and I need to save for driving lessons :)

I've decided that I want to try out the different sock yarns I have so I'm going to randomly choose a brand but then I can choose which actual colour I want to use (if I have more than one colour of that particular brand). This will suit me better because my colour mood changes dependent on the time of year. I'm rushing to finish a pair of socks I've had on the pins for ages, before the end of the month, and then I'm going to start knitting Socks from Stash. Although I've decided in January, as its my birthday month, that I can choose what yarn I want so I'm going to see if this lovely yarn which was gifted by a friend will work as a pair of Monkeys.

ABC Order

I am really impressed with how many people have joined. I like to "check out" KAL members when they post. It would really help to have the names in ABC Order. Just my knit 2, purl 2.

The Suspense Is Over!

Hello All!

So Christmas came and I finally got to open my box. I had been good, mind you: not a scratch, not a squeeze, not a shake, just endless contemplation. As predicted, there were 6 skeins. I won't lie, the first sight was a bit of a disappointment--but what could measure up to days of letting my imagination go wild? The darkish earth-tones appeared tame. But then, ummmmmmm, I put my hands to the yarn... What unexpected softness, almost creamy to the touch, sublimely warm... So, I have been petting and cuddling 2 balls of Trekking Pro Natura (brownish); 2 balls of Step with aloe vera and jojoba oil (did I die and go to heaven?) in blueish grey; 2 balls of Sockotta  in browns and greys. AND they are 110g/420m skeins, which means 6 whole pairs of socks, or even 9 if I knit strictly for myself (size 41/2-5 feet).

The rest of my stash? In truth, I am not quite sure any more, but I decided not to look and just draw at random each month or so. I will save for last The Crazy Ball: a ball made up of all the sock yarn leftovers in lengths of about 3-4 yds. The result should be absolutely funky.

Angela
http://angcraftcorner.blogspot.com/

OK, that was exciting!

I knew I had a lot of sock yarn (and more on the way from various sources) but today I actually counted to see what I have. There's enough lovely yarn at my place to make a minimum of twenty-eight pairs of hand knit socks - and one suffering from SSS. This group is going to be a good thing for me, I think.

So, just to introduce myself - I'm Kay, known as kayteau over most of the 'net. I've been knitting seriously for about 1 and 1/2 years now and socks are by far my most favorite thing to knit because they're easily portable and I'm a mass transit kind of gal. Living in the DC area, I get to spend a lot of time on buses and trains.

I haven't decided what my first pair will be although I have a couple of ideas. I have specific patterns in mind for a couple of pairs of socks, both of which would be new challenges for me and I just got some Socks That Rock in one of the Raven's Clan colourways that I really want to make into a lacey pair of socks... January 2 will hopefully see one of these three pair cast on!

Ready to Go!

I am organized now for Socks from Stash!

I have an excel sheet listing all of the yarns I want to use up and a pattern for them. I will use a random number generator to pick my project. This year, I knit about 25 pairs of socks, so I'm hoping I can do 2 pairs a month in 2008.

New Years Resolution: Use Stash, Use Stash, Use Stash

I have not taken an inventory. I don't really want to know. Maybe my New Years Resolution should be to have less in my stash then when I started. Maybe it should be to buy no new yarn and knit, knit, knit what I have until the Maryland Sheep Festival in May.

Although I plan to use my sock stash...I also intend to concentrate on the rest of my stash. Usually when I get sweater yarn, I have a pattern in mind. However, I am sure that I am not the only person who can't remember what she intended to do with some yarn...not a clue...nada...when she finally was ready to knit....This year I began putting a copy of the pattern with newly acquired yarn.

Another plan is to convince my daughters to adopt and knit some of my stash....a win win situation.

I have been going through books, my patterns stash, and the internet pulling out sock patterns I like. My next plan is to pair yarns with patterns. I like the idea of making my own kits.

Right now I am trying to finish 5 projects before beginning another.....and hopefully begin and finish my January socks by the end of the month......

Ready to begin.

Ready, Set . . .

Hello. I'm GG and I live in Southeast Minnesota. I'm glad I found this blog for some motivation to knit socks a little faster. I've knit 8 pairs during the last couple years -- tried plain and fancy, top-down and toe up. The challenge is fun, I love to wear the socks, and I get lots of compliments. My stash of colorful sock yarn has been calling to me lately.

After almost completely recovering from "knitters' elbow," like tennis elbow, I've now taught myself how to knit continental style, hoping to lessen the stress on my right arm. Happy sockknitting, everybody!

Introduction

Hello, and thank you for allowing me to join this select group!

My name is Helene and I live in Central New York, USA, which I have come to appreciate as a knitter's heaven: the winters are long, cold, and snowy, ideal for cozy knitting sessions and the prefect justification for producing many knitted objects, especially socks.

For Christmas this year all I asked for was sock yarn, and my DMIL, bless her tender heart, heard me. A box arrived a few days ago and has been sitting under the tree, taunting me, making me fantasize, visiting my dreams, tempting me into behaving badly and scratching just a little corner to take a peek. So far, I have managed to remain stronger than the temptation, but will I last another three whole days? be still, my heart...

From the size of it I would guess there are at least six skeins in the box, maybe more. And it comes from the Yarn BArn in Lawrence, KS. Oh, the possibilities! Will it be colorways that surprise me with every row? Or soft solids that lend themselves to lacey ventures or cable entrelacs? Thee more days...

On January 1st, 2006, I made the resolution that this would be the year that I would learn how to knit a sock. It took a few attempts, but I am now a die-hard toe-upper and I swear by tabi socks--a.k.a. my cloven socks.

2008 is going to be so much fun! I can tell already...

Hi

Just found this club yesterday and had to join! What a great idea to knit down the sock yarn stash. I've been knitting socks only since last spring but have managed to build a very impressive amount of yarn since then. It's beginning to nag at me, so it's time to destash!

I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and am fortunate to have six LYS, each with a slightly different stock of yarns, although online shops are very enticing, too! No pictures of the entire stash as yet, but there are several plastic bins. And a drawer. And a basket.

Not sure yet what I'll pick for January, but my choices may not be as random as some. I'm really looking forward to this.

How are you choosing your first Stash Sock?

I am curious to how ppl are choosing the first stash yarn and pattern they are going to use. So tell me, how are you choosing?

As for me, I was hoping to get feedback from others on which to use first. I don't have a huge pile to choose from so I think that makes it harder for me. I can't randomly reach in because I know my yarns intimately and feel like I would roam with my hands until I choose the one I wanted. Kinda defeats the purpose eh? So which of my yarns do you think I should use....trekking, alpaca, lorna's, sokotta, angora, wool in the woods, or the other one.

Hi from New Zealand

Hi

I'm Kate - from New Zealand. I have only been knitting socks for a little over three months, and have somehow already managed to acquire a stash of 20 sock yarns. Not too sure how that happened, considering that the range available locally is somewhat limited! I find online shopping very easy and if you are paying for shipping, you might as well make it worthwhile, right? Add in a trip to Hawaii and a birthday present from a daughter in England and voila - instant stash! Of course I have other projects to work on as well, so I'm hoping you are all going to inspire me to to keep whittling down that stash (then I can buy some more...!)

My Stash

100_2855

I pulled out all of the sock yarn yesterday. I have yarn for 45 pairs of socks. I think I told my BF earlier today that I have 35 pairs worth and he thought that was a lot. Oh well. He doesn't need to know.

So in the above picture is what I will use for the knit along. It's 35 pairs of socks. I actually still have this:

100_2856
It's mostly my Zen Yarn Garden, Scouts Swag, Sweet Georgia and anything that has huge amounts of yardage that I might use for a scarves. So it doesn't count.

Greetings from the Sunshine State

Hi,
I'm Patricia, currently living in central Florida. Socks are what I knit mostly due to warm climate conditions and their portability. My stash defies all reason and I am jumping at the opportunity to knit some of it up.
I have belonged to two sock clubs and have my regrets not renewing. I can no longer justify the yarn coming in the house faster than I can knit it. Someone on Ravelry suggested making ones own sock of the month club, placing individual skeins into bags, along with the suitable pattern and blindly grabbing one to knit every month. Great idea!
I hope to remain on the wagon until October, in time for the local fiber festival in North Carolina.
Good luck to all!

Another Intro

Hi all.

I'm Andrea and I so need to do this knitalong. I have a lot of sock yarn, probably enough to do at least 30 pairs of socks, maybe more. I've been pretty good the last couple of months and haven't bought much in the way of yarn. But I really need to use stuff up. I think I knit about 35 pairs of socks this year, but I'm looking forward to randomly picking yarn out and just knitting with it.

I am part of a sock club, so that's allowed for me. I'm going to have to spend a bit of time thinking how I will organize my stash for picking yarns and what kind of goals I want to meet.

I'm finishing up a pair of Christmas present socks than I'm going to take a bit of a sock break until January 2nd. Than it socks from stash time!

Newbie here!

Hi, everyone. I just joined and thought I'd post an introduction. I'm a 30-something single from San Diego. I've been knitting since my teens, and learned socks 2-3 years ago.

I took inventory of my stash after joining, and have 12 sets of sock yarn; if I can stay on a sock yarn diet, that should be perfect for 1 year. A couple are striped, some are solid, and some are multi colored, but with no set pattern to appear (I forget what the single word or small phrase for that is, and am too lazy to look it up right now :)).

I look forward to pulling out the Lucy Neatby, and forming plain sock patterns from Sock Wizard, and getting started!

Hello all!

I'm new and yet another Jessica, so I'll be JessicaS. I work full time and probably have enough sock yarn to knit about 120 pairs without buying a lick of yarn. I'm a fast knitter though, so I remain undaunted. I definitely need this group and look forward to knitting down my sock stash. I've probably knit about 60 pairs of socks in the last 4 years and it wasn't like I had a year of socks or anything. The rest of my stash is also large, so it should be knit down as well. Wish me luck!

Invitations from beginning of December

I got a message from new member who requested membership in the beginning of December. She hasn't got her invitation although it was sent on 6th. There were few others whose invitations were sent in the same period and who haven't replied to it. To be sure, I sent invitations again to all persons who have requested to join two weeks ago and haven't replied yet. We're not closing sign ups, I think there might have been a problem with Blogger or spam guard.

I check my mail every day and send invitations once a day. You should get one in two days after requesting to join. I've recently changed the e-mail address in the sidebar, because I started to get spam to my personal account, so I'd ask you to use the sidebar address from now on.
Hi I am Agusta in Iceland aka StashDiva, thanks for the membership ;-)
I am determined to knit socks just from my stash next year. What I plan to do is to sew little project bags and put random skeins of sockyarn into them ( this will help with reducing my quilt fabric stash ) then I will just pick a project bag out of the closet each time I finish up a pair and decide what to do with it.
I am sure I will get lots of motivation here and great suggestions as well, I think I will stick at least in the beginning to my hand deyed stash of sock yarn that has been going trough a growth spurt this year and take if from there.

Hello to All

Hello everyone! I'm glad to be a part of this club...hopefully I'll knock the mountain of sock yarn down a bit. I've made an early resolution not to but any more sock yarn after Dec 31. There are a few disclaimers and loop holes though. I posted the outline on my blog a while back.
I hope everyone has a great Holiday!

Joining Up

Hello. My name is Michelle and I am glad to join this group. I have a huge stash of yarn and am part of the Stash Along. But I decided that since I had yarn that was specifically bought for socks (and never used) that I would join this group. I haven't made socks lately, although I just finished off a pair I started for DH over 2 years ago. He is going to be excited to get them tomorrow on our first day of 12 days counting down to Yule. But I do like making socks and am glad to commit to making 1 pair per month for this group.

I have included a sock stash picture as well as details about my stash. I normally will do toe up socks, so am not concerned about the amount of unknown yardage in my stash. In fact, I think it is harder to use things like the trekking and sockotta because I only have 1 skein of each.

This is my sock yarn stash. 2 skeins of Wool in the Woods in purples, blues and black (200 yards each), 2 skeins of undyed Alpaca from NY (yardage unknown), 2 skeins of Cacade Pearls in green (120 yards each), 2 skeins of a an angora mix in purples and blues (yardage unknown), 1 skein of trekking XXL in purples and blues (459 yards), 1 skein of sockotta in greens and blues (414 yards) and 2 skeins of Lorna's Laces in fun bright colors (214 yards each). This is enough to make 7 pairs of socks, so I am good until July. But of course I will buy more sock yarn and have other yarn in my stash that can be used for socks, although it is not specifically sock yarn.

Well, here is to happy socks. Since we are supposed to pick randomly from our stash, I thought I would take your feedback on what you think I should use first from my stash. Thanks for the input. I am excited to get started!!

ah… but what to knit first?

That's my question.

It's me -- Kemtee -- finally aboard, breathing, and able to post. And I'm confused.

Not about this here KAL, but looking at the stash, I'm confused about what to pick for January's sock! Who to knit for? Me? DH? DD? Someone else? Should I go with a color theme? Blindfold and just grab something?

How are you all picking that first fateful skein?

another intro

Was going to wait until I had a sock stash picture to post. But the weathers been rather crappy for taking good pictures. Hi, I'm Jessica. I'm a SAHM, married to a sailor. I'm a sock addict. I have very little stash yarn that isn't sock yarn. I have enough sock yarn in stash for at least 50 pairs of socks. Most likely there is more. I'm just afraid to go count. I'll try to get a stash picture to post soon. I'm really looking forward to this club. The idea of picking a yarn at random and just going with it, really appeals to me. More than I would have ever thought. Its a great idea to force us to be creative. Can't wait to see what all we come up with. Also can't wait to pick your minds on what to do with some of my stash.

I'm Gonna Have To Love Ya and Leave Ya......

Hi socky stashers, just to say that unfortunately due to health reasons I won't be able to take an active part in the group as I had expected - I will pop by now and then to see how things are going! I will be hanging out in Ravelry when my energy allows me to, so take care y'all and have LOADS of fun!!

Hi ...

Hi everyone. Thanks for letting me join you all. I'm determined to knit as many pairs of socks as I can from my sock stash in 2008. I'll take a photo of my stash tonight and add it to this post later. I've so many sock patterns lined up that I'm sure I'll have no trouble using up some of my yarn. It's resisting buying more that's going to be difficult ... but I'm determined to stick to my guns!

I've a pair of socks ready to cast on before Christmas - these Pink Ribbon Socks. After Christmas I can't wait to get knitting a different pair a month!

I look forward to reading all your blogs and seeing the finished socks ;0)

Monday, December 3, 2007

Hi

I am a sock yarn addict, there I said it out loud! I always have a couple of pairs going on the needles at a time. I used to belong to seven different sock clubs, and am now down to three. This is almost all my sock yarn, I have another basket that wouldn't fit into the picture and a few skeins on one of the shelf that I forgot to include. I am looking forward to sharing and getting to know other sock yarn stashers.

another introduction

Hi! I'm Harrison (twiceknit in the blog world). At first, I wasn't sure that I'd have enough sock yarn in my stash to make it through the year, but them I got it all up on ravelry this weekend. Let's just say that I have a little more than I realized! Here's just a glimpse of the box I have that's full of sock yarn:

Finding yarn won't be a problem! I'm less positive that I'll be able to keep up the one pair per month pace, but I'm sure going to try!

just joined

Hi guys!! I just joined and am very excited to sock destash in 2008! I figured I might as well take some current pix of the sock stash ... I took some pix while the other half was shoveling snow so he didn't see the mass of yarn, ha ha.
I just ordered some Regia from Destash and 7 skeins of Opal Neon from LittleKnits (which is 60% off right now!!!) So with the added skeins I have enough to knit about 40 pairs of socks. I also love Knitpicks.....

Good Luck to all the sock destashers in 2008!

(i just updated my blog after being updateless for months)

Introducing myself and my stash

Hello, my name is Hanna and I might have too much sock yarn. When I decided to join this club I was worried that I don't have enough yarn to knit 12 pairs of socks. Today I made an inventory to my stash and now I know that I can do at least 20 pairs of socks without buying more yarn. Now I just have to decide what yarn to use first.
